Lab Director

The Eisaman Lab for Carbon Removal and Clean Technologies is led by physicist Matthew Eisaman

Prof. Eisaman is an Associate Professor with tenure at Yale University in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences and the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture. He is also the Co-Founder of Ebb Carbon, a startup based in San Carlos, California, that is commercializing ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (ocean CDR) and ocean acidification reversal using electrochemical ocean alkalinity enhancement.

He received a Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard in 2006 and an A.B. in Physics from Princeton in 2000. Prof. Eisaman has worked on a wide range of climate change solutions, and is broadly interested in how Earth’s natural processes can be leveraged and accelerated to minimize the worst effects of the climate crisis. His research is currently focused on ocean CDR, including: new approaches to ocean CDR; effects on marine ecosystems; establishing and improving methods for Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV); and hybrid approaches, especially the combination of ocean and geochemical CDR.

Postdoctoral Associates

LUKE GLOEGE

Luke received a Ph.D in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Columbia University in 2020, an M.S in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from University of Wisconsin - Madison, and an M.S in Water Resources Sciences and a B.S in Physics and Mathematics from University of Minnesota Duluth. He is interested in the global carbon cycle, with a focus on applying models and machine learning to understand the ocean carbon cycle. Within the Eisaman lab, Luke is using models to simulate ocean alkalinity release scenarios and building machine-learning based emulators. When not at his computer, Luke can be found around NYC with his dog and family or at a concert in the city.

The Eisaman Lab is actively hiring postdocs in all areas of ocean carbon dioxide removal (CDR),

Ph.D. Students

Cody Shaw

Coming from Maine, Cody started his Ph.D. in Chemistry at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2020. His research is currently focused on the characterization of precipitation phenomena involved with Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, namely Mg(OH) and CaCO. Outside of the lab, Cody enjoys taking advantage of the many beaches on Long Island and exploring the city.

Nico Theunissen

Nico started his Ph.D. at Yale in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences in the Fall of 2023. His research focuses on improving Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) through the co-development of new modeling tools and fit-for-purpose sensor arrays. He completed his bachelor’s degree in applied physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. When not in the department, Nico can usually be found on or in the water.

Research Associates

SHISHIR DASH

Shishir is an experienced applied scientist working on machine learning for the modeling and optimization of carbon dioxide removal. In over a decade in tech startups, he's built ML models for healthcare and marketplace econometrics. His Ph.D. from Stony Brook University focused on Bayesian machine learning with applications to biomedical time-series data. He has published and patented innovations in signal processing and generative modeling.

DEREK FUCICH

Derek received a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a B.A. in Statistics and Data Science from Yale University. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Stony Brook University's Department of Ecology and Evolution working with the Lynch Lab in assessing how Antarctic ecology is changing under increasing human encroachment. Prior to his time at Stony Brook, Derek was involved with multiple shorebird conservation projects alongside universities and governmental agencies in New York and North Carolina.

Undergraduate Students

MARCELO LeJEUNE

Marcelo is an undergraduate student at Yale University pursuing a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with an energy studies certificate. His research with the Eisaman lab centers on exploring the best use case for co-produced acid from electrochemical ocean alkalinity enhancement through technoeconomic and life cycle analysis. Besides his interest in carbon dioxide removal methods, Marcelo is an avid language learner.
